Morphology and taphonomy of trilobite guts: recent developments and perspectives
R. LEROSEY-AUBRIL, T. A. HEGNA, X.-J. ZHU & R. J. GARWOODSection: Palaeobiology and palaeoecology, Presentation: Oral
Trilobita, Digestive system, morpho-functional anatomy, soft-tissue preservation, feeding habits
Digestive structures are the only internal organs of trilobites that are commonly preserved in Palaeozoic lagerstätten. As such, they offer unique insights into poorly known aspects of trilobite biology, especially their feeding strategies. This contribution reviews the recent developments concerning the morphology and preservation of trilobite guts. The importance of a taphonomic approach to understanding trilobite biology will be emphasized, as well as the use of modern techniques, such as computer-aided tomography. .
